without the tolls
A Few Tips
In Manhattan, parking is outrageous. The odd numbered avenues flow southward. The odd numbered streets flow westward, but larger ones are bi. Park Ave is the only major bi-directional avenue, along with a few sections of other minor ones. For other boroughs, use a map.
Don't take the subway unless you know the lines, and their stops. NYC buses are ok (always ask for a bus transfer), but going less than five or so blocks, walk it. Less than twenty blocks, cab it. Otherwise, car service it.
The "outer boroughs" are ok to drive, but still bad. The "BQE", from which the top image above - showing South Street Seaport and Water Street - was taken, is our "passage into adulthood." Watch the road please, and good luck!
Take a cab from the airports. Bring only what you need for your stay, in as few bags as possible. Hotels are overpriced and only the gaudy ones are possibly clean. Reserve wayyy ahead.
Research what you want to do before arriving, i.e., pick some restaurants, shows, museums, attractions, friends, interviewers, etc. Reserve whenever possible.
Walking around town is tedious and not that enjoyable, in any weather, plus, you stand out, except in Times Square, of course. (Everyone there is lookin up too! :)
BTW, You did notify next-of-kin where you're headed, right? Just kidding, but the pandemic did change a lot here.
